What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a “cap” that’s placed on top of the chewing surface of a compromised tooth. They’re generally used to address teeth that have become so severely decayed or damaged that they cannot remain in the mouth without posing a risk to the patient’s oral wellness. Crowns are also used to address broken or misshapen teeth, teeth that have just undergone root canal therapy, or even to replace missing teeth. Here at our practice, we use durable, natural-looking materials for dental crowns and all other restorations to ensure lifelike and lasting results.

The Dental Crown Process

The dental crown process typically takes two appointments. Once we’ve decided that a crown can be used to assist your smile, the very first thing we’ll do is examine and prepare the tooth. The tooth is filed down as needed on top to ensure that there’s enough space for the crown to fit. Then an impression is made of the tooth receiving the crown and the nearby teeth, to ensure that your permanent restoration fits well and looks natural. These impressions are sent to a dental lab where your crown is manufactured, and in the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary crown on your tooth to protect it. Once the permanent crown is ready, this temporary one is easily removed, and the new one is cemented in place.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns offer all kinds of impressive benefits, including the following:

  • They prevent the need for teeth to be extracted, which is always a priority in modern dentistry.
  • A dental crown can improve your ability to bite and chew all kinds of foods.
  • They can last for 10 or more years with great care.
  • They look and feel just like your original teeth since they’re made from natural-looking materials, which can greatly boost one’s confidence!
