Making Sense Out of Same-Day Crowns by Answering 4 Common Questions

Same-day dental crowns go by a few other names – namely chairside crowns or CERECs. But the term “same-day” is pretty on the nose. Simply put, same-day crowns cut the treatment process in half. Who wouldn’t be interested?

Since CERECs are relatively new, odds are you have a couple of questions. Fortunately, we’ve broken down the info for you. Keep reading for the juicy details.

1. How Does a Same-Day Crown Work?

We can thank advanced dental technology for same-day crowns. Computers are able to do a lot these days, including taking thorough scans, assisted design, and precise crafting. Basically, dentists are using 3D imaging and computers to speed up the molding and building process of crown treatments. It’s sophisticated stuff, but dental crowns are still made out of real materials for real people. The only difference is the creation process.

2. What Can I Expect from a CEREC Treatment?

First, your dentist needs to prepare your tooth by cleaning out decay and restoring major damage. They might have to adjust the size of your tooth to accommodate a crown. Instead of taking a mold of your bite with that uncomfortably foamy dental material, your dentist will simply take a digital scan of your tooth. Once they have that, they can get to work designing your chairside crown to be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

Your dentist will then hand the design over to their fancy computer. All that’s left to do from there is wait for the machine to craft your crown and for your dentist to start placement. Within one-to-two hours, you’ll be all set!

3. Why Should I go Chairside for My Dental Crown?

Obviously, the main reason you would want a chairside crown is if you have a packed schedule. However, this computer-guided process also ensures a precise fit and immediate structural support.

The computers are even more accurate than dental foam when it comes to analyzing your bite, so CEREC crowns tend to be the perfect size on the first try. Since you’ll receive your permanent crown the same day instead of having to wait a week or two, there’s far less chance for your tooth to get further damage. Practically none, actually!

4. Are Same-Day Crowns as Durable as Normal Crowns?

If you’re a natural-born skeptic, you might be looking for the catch. Typically, when things are manufactured quickly, the quality takes a hit. Is that true for same-day crowns?

Nope! Same-day crowns are cut from a porcelain block. This means they have the same durable and stain-resistant qualities of traditionally crafted crowns. Just remember that your fancy chairside model will still require regular maintenance to stay stylish and promote longevity.

If you find yourself needing some extra help maintaining or cleaning your CEREC crown, ask your dentist for an assist. This is truly a breakthrough process for dental crowns with many advantages, so don’t let fear of care keep you away!
